After my accident, I was told I would never be able to run again with the leg injuries I had, much less ride a bike or swim. When I got cleared by my nerve surgeon that running would not impact the healing of my nerves, I gave myself the aggressive goal of teaching myself how to swim, bike, and run for in IRONMAN with the use of only one arm and in under a year of preparation. An IRONMAN triathalon is known as one of the hardest races in the world. The race consists of a 2.4 mile (3.9 km) swim, 112 mile (180.2 km) bike ride, with a 26.2 mile (42.2 km) run with an overall time limit of 17 hours. While doing all of the above with only the use of one arm is extremely difficult, an IRONMAN has always been something I’ve wanted to take part in. I am hoping to not only use this as a fundraising opportunity but also an event to raise awareness and show other people with injuries such as mine that anything is possible.
